Even if the creators are trying to make schlock, you're not going to make better schlock than Joe Dante, who always brought his own wicked subversions of Americana with him. In a lot of ways, I think the best comparison for the Step Up movies (or any dance movies in general) is martial arts flicks. In both, while the plot is merely a flimsy pretense to have dances/fights, you still need a star who can bring charisma to the leading role that you can hinge your enjoyment on. If Scott Pilgrim is pandering for throwing in a handful of video game references, I'm having a hard time coming up with a piece of popular entertainment that isn't "pandering".
